EVAPORATING SUNS
MYTHS OF THE GULF

Map illustration commissioned for the catalog of the Evaporating Suns exhibit, held at KBH.G in Basel, Switzerland. The show centred around contemporary myths from the Arabian Gulf.

The illustration approach is heavily inspired by medieval maps, where often the borders of oceans, seas and landmasses, which are fact, are overlayed with images of a fantastical nature. These images draw on the stories, myths and legends of the region. The sun at the centre of the map mirrors the type and graphical elements which are present throughout the exhibition catalog.

The mythical creatures’ clothing and jewellery draws heavily on the Gulf’s heritage, taking inspiration from pieces exhibited at museums and in private collections.
